wonderin if you were ever coming around. dark, brown eyes stared out from the stall as they watched the slender figure of an average-sized girl make her way towards the beast. katie's eyes caught hold of phantom's as she neared the stallion and she beamed, holding out a palm of sugar cube's to him. the dutch warmblood stallion arched his neck perfectly over the door, nuzzling her palm for the cubes. she giggled and scratched his muzzle, kissing him gently on the nose. she took off the red halter that was hanging on her shoulder and unlatched the door of his stall, pushing it to the side. she buckled the halter around phantom's head and clipped the lead onto it, guiding him out of his stall as gently as she could. he followed her quietly as she led him to the cross-ties, snapping him in so he couldn't break away. she fed him more sugar cubes from her pocket before grooming her baby as neatly as she could.
as she placed the saddle pad and saddle onto his back, katie couldn't help but feel slightly nervous. she had taken a break from riding for a few days because she had felt rather sick, but she still came to groom and visit phantom each day. she shrugged as she carefully undid his halter and slipped the bridle over his head. she had trained him well enough not to make a break for it when she unclipped him from the cross-ties or took off his halter. he nuzzled her gently and katie couldn't help but laugh as she fed him two more sugar cubes. "Okay, fattie. You have had enough sugar," she teased, patting him on the neck. she grabbed her halter and slung it over her shoulder and took a hold of his bridle, leading him back to his stall where she hooked the halter back up onto the hook outside his stall.
she coaxed him along to the outdoor arena, sighing as she got out there. she spotted the jumps at the end of the arena and felt a smile creep onto her face. she loved to jump and was aiming for an olympic career. if only she could pull it off. she depended on it, too. katie unlatched the gate and led her stallion in, watching as he side-stepped a chair and stood patiently for her to latch the gate again. he followed her silently to the other end of the arena, his hooves making a soft thumping sound against the sand. she halted him and hoisted herself up into the saddle, adjusting the stirrups as needed and his girth before sitting up straight and taking hold of the reins that rested against her partner's neck. she clucked loudly and the pair took off, phantom tossing his head, seeing as he hadn't been out on a ride in a while.
katie chuckled and turned him in figure eights, keeping a steady pace. she kept up with his movements, feeling him canter beneath her. she aimed him towards a smaller oxford jump away from the other girl and pulled herself out of the seat as they bounded over it. she patted him and turned, keeping him under her direction. she urged him over a larger jump now, feeling the air whip at her face as she flew over. she grinned happily and patted him on the neck, loving his movements. katie turned him and pushed him towards a large jump standing at almost five and a half feet. she shifted her weight out of the seat and onto the balls of her feet as she crouched over his neck, moving with him. she cheered when they landed, praising the stallion happily.

wonderin if you were ever coming around. katie kept her gelding at the rhythmic canter, feeling the pounding of his hooves as they hit the ground, sending dirt flying around them. she looked around the arena, slowly bringing him to a collected trot. she heard that scream, but where did it come from. only then did her brown eyes fall upon a boy who looked about her age. with his blonde hair and pretty green eyes, katie recognized him around school, but never really knew his actual name. he was cute, she'd give him that. she had never really seen the boy around the barns or anything, so it was a bit new for her, but she didn't mind. she kept phantom at a collected trot, passing by the rail that the boy was now leaning against. as he spoke, she smiled, turning her head to look at him. her? katie? making the equestrian team? that had been her dream since she came to this school. katie had been training with phantom for the olympics. this had to help, right?
she chuckled as kept him going, keeping close to the rails, intent on listening to him. he spoke about his friend being co-captain and some girl named ashley. did he really think she could make it? katie had been riding a little less than some of the other riders at the stable, but she was quick and precise when she got into the arena and faced those jumps. without phantom, she would have never been able to do it. he had brought her plenty of first and second place ribbons and medals and for that, katie was proud of him. she loved the big horse more than anything. phantom was basically katie's baby and if anything happened to him, she would kill anyone that hurt him. phantom really deserved all the attention katie gave him. she worked him and trained him so hard, it was definitely a fair trade off for the gelding. she used leg cues to turn the beast, his head and neck arched magnificently as he moved into a canter, his mane whipping against his neck.
katie moved with the horse, keeping her motions graceful and fluid. as she slowed phantom down, she pulled him up next to the top rail the boy was seated on. the gelding tossed his head, making himself presentable for the boy. that was his personality. katie had a show-off of a horse and everyone knew it. when she entered show rings and anyone clapped, he would arch his neck and hold his tail high. she giggled and rubbed his neck while unbuckling the helmet , the chin straps hanging down beneath her chin. she waited a few moments before taking the helmet off and buckling it, slipping her arm through the hole and letting it hang on the crook of her arm. she brushed her bangs out of her eyes, letting them fall to the side. her curls had been pulled back into a loose bun which seemed nearly flawless, though, let's be honest, with curls you can't really tell the difference.
he introduced himself as paxton, paxton bold. katie smiled and extended a hand out to the boy. "I'm Katie Landry," she beamed. "Do you really think I could make the team? I haven't been riding as long as the others, especially not with Phantom, but I work pretty hard. Only person I fear is Skylar," she made a face when she said the girl's name. quite honestly, skylar was a bit frightening, but katie had been willing to put with her if she was put onto the team.

[/font][/i] because maybe you're gonna be the one that saves meand after all, you're my wonderwall.I smiled at her embarassment, the way she carried herself, but also with the way she was smiling at me. It was impossible to truly return such a beautiful, effortless gesture, but I tried. I felt strange little flutters in my stomach, grinning wider because boys were supposed to make the first move and for once I'd really made one without acting like a little kid and saying 'pretty lady' at least once. I was actually having a real, honest conversation with this girl - Katie, she'd said her name was. A common name for an extraordinary girl. I reveled in the fact that she didn't even seem to realize this fact. Do you really think I could make the team? She asked. Of course! I responded, over-the-top and happy as ever, practically bouncing off the walls. I leaned forward on my toes then back on my heels for good measure, still grinning, hands in pockets. And if you don't, I'll buy you Ben and Jerry's for weeks, we'll ride together everyday, and go T.P. Skylar's house. I nodded, backing myself up. The words came quickly - I was a hyper wreck. I'd had Starbucks a few minutes before I came here, the caffeine was kicking in, and the high of being able to talk to this girl I'd been watching was exhilarating.
She pulled up to the rail, and attempted to let go of my hand she'd been shaking, but I reached mine forward and tightened my fingers around her wrist. I let our hands fall back on the saddle, grinning shyly at her. My green eyes met her brown ones bravely for a moment, but the intensity of them forced me to look back at the brown dirt of the arena, which held much less light and interest for me. I was flirting with her gently, my thumb rubbing back and forth across the back of her hand. I was purposefully taking this too far to be funny, but I wasn't faking the shy routine, as I usually did. You know what? You look hungry. I bet you're starving. Won't you let me take you out to lunch? We can talk about strategy for your tryouts coming up. I looked left, then right, and lowered my voice to a sneaky tone, my hand still grasping hers. If you be really nice, I'll come be your cheerleader at the tryouts. Or if all else fails, I'll rig the tryouts. I grinned again, nodding, my brown hair falling in my eyes with each motion. I had no clue how adorable or persuading I was being right now. Katie had no clue what she was getting into.
