Rea finished tacking up seven, patting the gelding's neck. he nudged her sweetly, then pinned his ears and nipped her arm. rea jumped back. 'seven!" she reflexed and sapped his neck. his look was innocent, dark eyes, floppy ears and all. the horse nibbled his hay as rea tugged on his saddle. it fell to the side slightly. she looked at him with disgust. "you pig!" she cried, throwing her arms around his neck and hugging him. she fixed the saddle, tightening the girth, waiting a few minutes, and checking it again. satisfied, she put on her helmet and led him out. she was going to the arena, but probably jumping 3', and her dad demanded she wear her vest over 2'6". she thought that was ridiculous. charles owen helmet and vest, you couldn't get much better. she clicked her tongue, leading her horse out of the barns shadows, using the fence to mount him.
Rea nudged him with her heels, sitting easily on the saddle. she wasn't the typical rider, so people never thought much of her, but she was a natural at it. they walked around the ring once, then she nudged him again, lightly tilted forward. besides showing in a more forward seat, it was her normal riding style. they trotted around a little, and so far he was behaving like a dream, but rea was worried. "what are you planning, stupid horse?" ok, not worried, more angry and frustrated. she never meant what she aid to seven, when it was mean, she just got frustrated. the only thing angry about her was her tone though, and seven kept lazy, keeping the same pace.
Rea shortened her reins and squeezed him. the little horse jumped forward into his springy canter rea found it easy to sit. she swatted a fly off her leg, and that's when even found the perfect oppurtunity. the second her hand was back on the reins, he pulled his head down and bucked, jumping slightly before cantering a little more. rea knew it, she had known it. she sat it easily though, kicking him when he stopped. he cantered eagerly, tossing his head then evening his stride out automatically, bending around the turn. rea sniffed, typical seven, being perfect afterward.
Rea finished cantering not long later, looking to the jumps set up. one side was little enough to warm up, the other went up to 3', so she was good. she clicked her tongue, trotting over some little cross rails. seven picked up his feet, stopping at the end to lift his head up and whinny, looking for another horse, then got going with a jab in the sides by rea. he always did that, and she kept trying to break him from his habit. she nudged him with her heels and he picked up his trot again, trotting over a vertical then cantering a few strides to a little oxer. it didn't take long before they could jump 2'6'".
Seven listened to his rider's soft hands and legs as they guided him through the little course rea had made. she squeezed lightly to keep him going, and harder to remind him he was working. he snorted, tossing his head slightly as he propelled himself over a jump, excited now. he loved jumping. once he got into the flow of things, he was perfect. finally he felt a tug on his reins, indicating him to go back on the track. he snorted, moving to the outside of the ring and feeling another tug. he slowed down obediently, putting his head down to relax.
